| In
response to input from campus constituent groups such as the Academic
Senate and the Instructional and Administrative Advisory Committees
on Computing asking for increased security of network and computing
services, Information Technology Services (ITS) has recommended and
will now install a campus perimeter firewall as part of an overall
information security solution.
It is the intention of ITS and the firewall project
team to make this installation as trasparent and smooth as possible.
The information on this web page is intended to provide basic information
about the project, answers to common questions and helpful support
links.
A campus firewall helps Cal Poly:
- balance the openness of the Internet with the need to protect
the privacy and integrity of campus information and services,
- reduce the threat of attacks that can deny service to campus
computer users,
- reduce the likelihood of off-campus individuals using campus
computers to launch attacks against others on the Internet (aka
Pass Through Sites).
Direct Internet access from campus computers is still available
The intent of the firewall is to protect campus information and
resources -- not restrict appropriate access to campus resources,
services and the Internet. The general campus workstation user (student,
faculty or staff) should not see any change in appropriate use access
to the Internet and campus resources and will not be affected by
this implementation. The chief impact will be where servers are
concerned.

about the campus firewall and how to submit configuration requests.
